More News from Nowhere: the Artist at 90

Another in the News from Nowhere series, exploring what it means to be (and stay) human in a world dazzled by AI.

The Artist at 90 is a portrait of long-time neighbor Barbara Leoff Burge seated in front of a painting she did in her high school years.  (Click on the image to enlarge.)  She is a co-founder of the Women’s Studio Workshop and has works in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Mass Art Library.  Barbara has also been proclaimed Queen of Grove Street by her neighbors, having lived here since 1965.  And, if you happen to have a question about Yiddish idiomatic expressions or words, she’s your maven.  (She taught me that one.)

Barbara breathes creativity, enthusiasm and a sense of fun into her art, her royal duties and her life in general.  I’m not sure a portrait really can get at all that.

But, in any event, we are lucky to have her!
