One can’t visit Minnewaska State Park without being reminded that it is up to us humans to take care of the natural world. The last time I was there, though, something else crossed my mind: maybe we’re not in charge here. This painting of one of the last gazebos on the lake represents that idea. (Click on it to enlarge.)
Maybe nature knows we’re just a nuisance that will soon be gone, in the same way all of the once-grand accoutrements of the two lakeside hotels are gradually disappearing. Nature doesn’t care what we do. . .it’s just waiting us out.
I can’t figure out whether that’s reassuring or not.
