The Glory in the Gloom

Whenever I’m on my recent plein air excursions, I keep thinking of Tom Thomson who painted the Canadian landscape 100 years ago.  He was known for charging into the middle of a storm with his paints to directly capture its fury.  Storms, especially approaching storms have an exquisite gloom about them.  So, in my own cautious way, I thought I’d give it a try.  The next time I saw a storm approaching over the Ridge, I headed up to Mohonk to take it on.  And here it is (click on image to enlarge.)  

Full disclosure:  as I was frantically painting away, the storm in all its fury passed over and by the time I finished the sketch, I was bathed in sunshine.  But I get points for trying, right?
