Painting in a Pinch: How Time Can Shape Art

About a year ago, I joined the Arts Society of Kingston.  It provides members with monthly opportunities to show their works.  These shows are themed, and that’s what led me to consider how time can shape painting. 

The theme for August’s show was “The Moon in Daylight,” conjuring all kinds of Jungian imagery related to the unconscious that artsy types just can’t resist.  I didn’t realize what the theme was until I had all of two days to submit.  And without an appropriate painting on hand, I had one day to get something ready. 

So, behold “Moon in Daylight.”  (Click on the image to enlarge.)  A very simple design finished in a day.  (I even borrowed some of the branches from one of my other paintings).  It is a minimalist approach I’d never tried before. 

I guess  the press of time (combined with a healthy dose of flat out panic) can be our friend.
